Trifari Sterling Vermeil, Ruby & Diamond Necklace & Bracelet NWS 1-1423 ~ This is a famous Trifari set designed by Trifari's most renowned designer, Alfred Philippe, in the 1940's. It was intended as a look back to the wildly popular garnet jewelry of the 19th century. ~ The necklace is comprised of 78 faceted, oval, red glass stones of the finest Austrian crystals that money can buy. Each stone has been carefully prong-set by hand into a sterling silver setting, into 2 linear rows. These 2 rows are separated with a row of faceted, sterling "ingots", each of which has a faceted, faux diamond set at either end. ~ The bracelet mimics the same design, in the same scale, with 36 faceted, faux rubies forming the focal point. ~ All of the stones in this set have been lovingly placed into vermeil. During World War II, costume jewelry designers were obliged to use sterling silver for their jewelry, as all other metals had been restricted for use in the war effort. ~ The necklace measures 18.5" long and .75" wide; it terminates in a folding clasp that is hidden in the design. ~ The bracelet measures 7" long and .75" wide, and bears the same type of folding clasp. ~ Both pieces have been marked "Trifari" on the reverse, with the crown logo above the "T", and "STERLING" Research: Costume Jewelry - The Great Pretenders, by Kelley & Schiffer, p. 19.
