Limoges Victorian Portrait on Porcelain, 10 K Gold Frame

NWS 6-935

~ A charming Victorian porcelain portrait brooch with hand-painted details of "Vagabond Boy".  Also known as "Gypsy Boy", this was a popular Victorian romantic image seen on a number of pieces of porcelain, including plates and vases. The pictures were copied and painted by hand. Probably made by Limoges.

~ Notice also that the artist has decorated the background with a floral motif. This is an unusual rendition of the subject, as most of the ones I've seen have plain backgrounds. This example is a very carefully and well-executed portrait.

~ The porcelain has been bezel-set in a gold colored frame, with an extended outer frame which tested positive for 10 KT gold.

~ Measures 1.5" wide and 1.75" high.

~ There is a number impressed on the reverse - I think it reads "31". This marking could indicate that the piece was created at Limoges, as they are known for similar numerical stampings by their artisans. It would also explain the fineness of the execution and the framing.

~ Original pin stem still extends beyond the edge of the frame, which is correct for a Victorian brooch, with the original "C" clasp.
