Juliana Pink Polka Dot Crystal Necklace NWS 1-1654
~ Straight out of some 1950's fairy tale comes this incredible necklace, made by Juliana. Collectors know that the name "Juliana" was actually the company of Delizza & Elster, famous for their unusual art glass stones, their applications of hand-painted details on their jewelry, and their unusual construction or fabrication, that today aids collectors in identifying Juliana pieces. Juliana jewelry was not signed. It was tagged with paper hang-tags that have long since disappeared for the most part. ~ This pink polka dot necklace has been constructed in a gold tone setting, and all the crystals have been prong-set (not glued in)! The neck chain is comprised of fiery, vivid pink panther chatons (rounds) that run fully along its length. ~ The fantasy theme is introduced by the nine, black, glass beads at the center of the necklace. Each black bead has been hand-painted with raised, pink polka dots surrounded by hand-painted splashes of frothy, green foliage. Such whimsy, and imagine the time it took to create each bead! Each differs from the other, of course. Collectors call these "sugar beads" because of their frosted, or frothy, appearance. ~ Surrounding these sugar beads are rings of tiny, fuchsia chatons that have been baked with a coating called "aurora borealis". Here's where the art glass stones come in. This special coating makes the stones glimmer in multi-colors, depending on how the light strikes them, in gold, green, lilac, midnight blue, silver and pink. There are also larger, marquis-cut stones of fuchsia, mixed in with apple green chatons. ~ Featured in the book, The Art of Juliana Jewelry, by Katerina Mussetti. Also featured in the book, Juliana Jewelry Reference, by Ann Pitman, page 77. ~ Measures 15.5" long, and the center drop measures 2" wide x 1.5." high. The necklace terminates in a hook clasp, with extension chain for adjustable length. c. 1950's, in good vintage condition, with some very minor paint loss normal for its age. Unusual, and rarely found, a frothy, fantastic fantasy. Price = $227.00 d-j, nex |
