Crystal & Diamond Rope Necklace

~ Well, this necklace isn't really a "rope", of course, but it feels that way in my hand. It's made of ... wait, let me count them... thirty, that's THIRTY round, faceted, crystal balls.

~Each ball is covered with scores of facets, all cut by hand, so that they're sharp and crisp. You can feel the edges of these facets when you run your finger over them, a sign of the quality of old world craftsmanship. And each facet acts as a little reflector, catching and throwing the light. So, multiply the number of facets on each crystal ball, times the number of balls (30), and you've got a tremendous amount of fire power in this necklace. ~ As you can see, the clasp has been replaced. The original was probably worn out long ago. This necklace has considerable heft.

~ In between each crystal ball is a double band of faux diamonds, sewn into a halo around the gap that is formed where two balls meet. I've never seen anything like this in any other necklace in all my years of collecting.

~ Measures 17 3/8" long and .75" wide.

c. 1930-40, best guess, in pristine condition, a sublime example of American fashion art history, and completely unique.
