Art Deco "Machine Age" Chrome Bracelet NWS 9-1550
~ Although the element, chromium, was first discovered in 1797, it wasn't used as a plating material until 1840. However, at that time, nickel plating was commonly used, so chrome didn't become popular until 1929. When it was discovered that chrome was more durable, more resistant to corrosion and much brighter than nickel, chrome quickly caught on. Suddenly everything was being plated with chrome! Car bumpers, toasters, soda fountains, bicycles, trains and jewelry. It quickly became the miracle material of The Machine Age. It was all about the slipstream and the gleam. ~ This bracelet is a quintessential example of it. The repeated, geometric design is pure Art Deco. The chrome has been 'folded" into a topless, pyramid form so that each link is hollow. There are 17 of these triangles, forming 6 rows of links, three rows wide! ~ The bracelet measures 7.5" long and 1.25" wide. It terminates in a folding clasp.
c. 1929, in excellent vintage condition, and original clasp. Absolutely not one single dent! Price = $135.00 b, deco |
