Art Nouveau Topaz and Brass Necklace NWS 6-1534
~ The chain is called a book chain and was very popular during the Victorian era. In this example, you can see the floral motifs being introduced, a typical Art Nouveau theme. The brass is hand-stamped and engraved. There are 2 tiny areas of verdigris appearing in two places, but I have not attempted to polish this necklace. I'll leave that for the preference of the new owner. ~ The necklace has two large, faux topaz stones set in the book chain. They're an unusual rectangular shape and are held in by prongs with open backs. Both the fronts and backs are faceted. In such a delicate piece as this, it amazes me that these stones haven't been lost after more than a century. It has indeed been lovingly kept, probably in one family, for many generations. ~ Necklace measures 16" long. The triangular centerpiece measures 1.2" wide and 1.25" high. Necklace terminates in its original spring ring clasp, which works perfectly. c. 1905, in great vintage condition, a piece to be cherished for many lifetimes to come.
