Coro Retro Topaz Bracelet

on Hold

NWS 2-1258

~ This fantastic bracelet was created in the 1940's. It's a perfect example of jewelry from what is now called the Retro era (1938-1948), in which designs were typified by bows, swirls and curls. It's very rare to find a bracelet of this nature and boldness. I have seen dozens upon dozens of Retro brooches, and equally numerous Retro necklaces. But in all my years, this is only the 2nd Retro bracelet I've ever seen. And, this is the largest one I've ever seen. Suffice it to say, this bracelet is rare.

~ You can see by the number of photos that the spirit and beauty of the stone was hard to capture with a camera. For one thing, the crystal is the most unusual I've ever seen (another first!).  It's shaped like a large shield (how many of these have you seen?) and has been faceted on both sides. The top of the crystal has a large, flat table, with facets all the way around its edges. The back of the stone is faceted so that the stone comes to a point in the center. The resulting effect of all this hand labor is that the stone has a star of light within it - sort of like a kaleidoscope - where all the facets come together, throwing rays of light in different angles. Again, where will we ever see another one like this??

~ Glamorous bracelets like these were very popular in the late 1930's - 1940's.  The color of the crystal is a smokey topaz, but, because it's transparent, it takes on interesting colors, depending on what color is behind the stone.

~ The stone is surrounded by curls and swirls of goldtone metal, simulating flowing ribbon. Imagine the skill it took to make solid metal look like fabric! Two of the curls are plated with rose gold, and  the remainder of the bracelet is plated with yellow gold (all faux).

~ The band of the bracelet is often called a snake band, or "cobra style", very flexible but not stretchable (in other words, not elastic). It encompasses hundreds of tiny, goldtone plates that are interlocked.

~ It measures 7 1/8" long; the band measures 1.25" wide and does not taper. The central motif measures 2.25" wide and 2 1/8" high

c. 1940, in excellent condition. You won't find this one again!
