1930's Turquoise & Brass Beads Necklace

NWS 2-1538

~ In 1939, the rain finally came. The worst American drought in recorded history, effecting 27 states, had started in 1931, and within 5 short years, 1 billion acres of farmland had lost its topsoil. Gone. Another 125 million acres of land was rapidly turning from crops to dust. America's wheat basket was empty. The resulting Dust Bowl exodus was the largest migration in American history. By 1940, 2.5 million people had moved out of the Plains states.

“The land just blew away; we had to go somewhere.”
— Kansas preacher, June, 1936

~ Jewelry is about beauty, yes, but also about art. It's about self expression. For American women, sometimes that self-expression takes the form of buoyancy of the indomitable feminine spirit. The love for beauty doesn't die in hard times, but it does morph into something different. Its expression may change form, but the attitude stays the same. The attitude says, I am here. I am alive. I can still celebrate life.

~ Gone are the glitzy stones - for now, just for now - but not the gaiety. What? No champagne and caviar? So,... bring out the paper cups and the beer, and we'll sing a song. This necklace is comprised of lively, brass chain links that have been square-cut and highly polished.

~ Suspended from the chain are 2 rows of turquoise cones: smaller ones in the upper row, and larger ones below. Brass balls hang from the base of each dangle. It's charming, it's funky, and it's totally awesome fun!

~ The necklace measures 16.25" long and the longest dangle measures 3" from the center.

c. 1939, in perfect condition
