A Wandering Minstrel Brooch
on Hold
NWS 12-1621
~
I imagine this troubadour is
singing a song from "The Mikado": "A wand'ring minstrel I,
a thing of shreds and patches, Of ballads, songs, and snatches,
And dreamy lullaby." What whimsy, and so much fun!

Decked out with his large, ruffled collar and engraved diamond shapes,
our jester is decorated in the standard 18th century garb, as
depicted in Cezanne's painting, "Harlequinn", 1888-1890 (shown at
right). ~ His face
is a beautiful glass moonstone. Faceted, faux emeralds tip the
corners of his hat and decorate his collar, while faux diamonds
bedeck his cuffs and the edge of his mandolin. A pale sapphire
cabochon is seated in the belly of the instrument which is also
engraved with strings and tuning keys.
~ The brooch appears to
be signed on the reverse, but the mark is illegible. I suspect
Boucher, as this piece looks very similar to other brooches of the
same period and genre, especially the use of the twisted leg form. |

~ The brooch measures 2.75"high
and 2" wide.
c. 1939, in great vintage condition, the
pin stem has a small bend but works perfectly.
