Trifari Sterling Vermeil Fur Clip, White Queen Chess Piece, by Alfred Philippe

NWS 11-1398

~ The White Queen Chess Piece Fur Clip is made of solid sterling silver, with cream enamel, rhinestones and a soft gold vermeil plating. During World War II, costume jewelry designers were obliged to use sterling silver for their jewelry, as all other metals had been restricted for the war effort.

~ The White Queen has a line of faceted, faux emeralds that have been set around the pedestal base. The top rim of the pedestal is black enamel.

~ She wears a necklace comprised of faceted, faux diamonds. Her black enamel and vermeil crown is rimmed with a dozen faux diamonds, and is topped with 5 crystal rubies (3 are original faux ruby cabochons, and 2 are faceted ruby stones that are old replacements).

~ The White Queen's eyes, eyebrows and lips are depicted in vermeil, as is her beautiful, curling hair.

~ This adorable fur clip measures 1 5/8" high and 7/8" widest. The clip has retained its perfect "snap" with a secure hold.

~ Signed TRIFARI with the crown logo above the "T" and also marked "STERLING" and "Des.Pat. No. 140843".

c. 1945, one tiny spot of enamel is worn on the tip of her nose (the high spot), otherwise in excellent condition.

Research: Featured in the book, American Costume Jewelry, by Brunialti & Brunialti, p. 123-4. Also in Collecting Rhinestone and Coloured Jewelry, by Marianne Dolan, p. 241. The Chess Set is fun to collect and is among Trifari's most famous pieces, designed by Trifari's top designer, Alfred Philippe. This advertisement (on right) was in "Vogue Magazine", 1945.
