Is It A Diamond?

Or Is It a Rhinestone (paste, crystal, glass, etc.)?

Here's How to Tell:

Sometimes you may purchase a piece of jewelry, and then wonder if the clear stones could be real diamonds! The following information is from the book, Answers to Questions About Old Jewelry, 1840-1950 (5th Ed.), by C. Jeanenne Bell, p. 420:

"If you have a ... clear stone and want to know whether or not it is a diamond, there are some simple tests that may help in this determination.

1)  Draw a line on a sheet of paper. Place the stone (table down) on the line. If the stone is a diamond, the line will not be visible. Any other clear stone will allow the line to show through.

2) The next test is done by placing the stone on a sheet of white paper and holding a penlight under it. Be sure that the light shines up under the stone. If the stone is a Cubic Zirconia, YAG, or any other clear stone, the light will outline the stone and also show through the middle. If the stone is a diamond, the outline will show through but the middle will remain dark.

3) Another test is the "breath" test. If breathing on the stone causes it to fog, this is an indication that the stone in question is not a diamond."
